The Island of Hvar, the longest island in the Adriatic Sea, is located between the island of Korcula and the island of Brac. Most settlements on Hvar developed around fertile Velo polje (Big field) while the city of Hvar lies in the south bay of the island right across Pakleni islands. Land area of Hvar is 299,6km and it has around 11.500 inhabitants. Tourism is the most important economic sector on the island of Hvar but viticulture as well as livestock farming, olive and fig growing, fishing and well known Hvar lavender are also important source of income for the local population. Island of Hvar has a Mediterranean climate and the west part of the island is especially dry, in fact the west part of the island belongs to the driest parts of Croatia.
